Bench Notes #2
The 11 p.m. booking problem.
Your customer finally has a quiet minute. You have finally put your phone down. A booking page can meet you both halfway.

Picture a solo tutor. At 11 p.m., a parent remembers they meant to book next week’s lesson. They send a message. In the morning the tutor replies, the parent is at work, and a perfectly ordinary appointment becomes a two-day conversation.
The useful part of online booking is simple: the customer can see a time you are actually offering and choose it. Your website does the asking while you do something else.
Give each appointment a clear shape.
Start with one service you know well. “Piano lesson — 45 minutes” tells someone more than “Book a session.” Add the duration, price and practical details they need before arriving. If the first visit is different, make that distinction clear.
Then set availability you can keep. A calendar full of open slots is not a promise you want to make accidentally. Check regular hours, time off and how much notice you need. Leave room in your working day for the things that happen between customers.
A good booking page answers the next question before it becomes another message.
Choose what happens about payment.
Benchlight booking can take a reservation without collecting money online, or use Stripe for a fixed deposit or full appointment payment. A deposit is part of the service price: customers should understand the total, what they pay now and what remains due directly to you at the appointment.
The booking module is $10/month per website. Reservations without online payment have no booking commission. When money is collected online, Benchlight charges 5% of the appointment amount paid, excluding tax; Stripe processing is separate. Check the current payment pricing before choosing your setup.
Try the journey from the other side.
- Open the booking page on your phone. Is the service name immediately clear?
- Check the dates, times and timezone against your real working hours.
- Read the payment and cancellation information as someone booking for the first time.
- When a customer books, check the confirmation and private management link, then manage the appointment in your dashboard.
Benchlight accounts for existing appointments when showing availability. Customers receive booking emails and a private link to manage their appointment. This release uses one shared schedule; multi-staff scheduling and external calendar sync are not included.
Keep the first version small.
One clear service and a sensible week of availability is a useful start. You can add more once you know what customers need. The goal is fewer messages about whether Tuesday at three is still free.
Put it to work.
