Bench Notes #3
Less “Is this still available?” More ready for pickup.
A small collection does not need a complicated shop. It needs good product details, honest stock and a handover that makes sense.

Imagine a potter with twelve mugs ready for the weekend. A photo goes up on social media. Then come the messages: which colors are left, can you save two, how do I pay, and where do I collect them?
A shop gives those answers one place to live. Start with the collection you can actually fulfill, rather than filling a catalog with things you might make later.
Make the product do some explaining.
Use a clear photo, a plain name and a description that answers practical questions. For a mug, that might mean its size, material and care instructions—only facts you know are true. Put choices such as color or size into variants, with the correct price and stock for each.
Do not let an attractive sample become an accidental promise. Replace example photos and descriptions, confirm every price, and count the real stock before you open orders.
Write pickup instructions for a stranger.
“Collect from the studio” works if someone already knows you. A first-time buyer needs the location, when collection is available, how to identify their order, and what to do if plans change. Explain whether they should wait for a ready-for-pickup message before traveling.
Keep these instructions beside your shop policies. If you also ship, make that a clear choice rather than leaving people to guess what happens after checkout.
The sale is not finished when the payment arrives. It is finished when the right parcel reaches the right person.
Keep the handover out of your memory.
Benchlight’s shop puts products, variants, stock, orders and refunds in your dashboard. It supports up to 100 products, shipping or local pickup, and a CSV product import if you already have a catalog. Guided Stripe setup connects payments to your business.
The current shop is for US/USD domestic physical-goods sales and local pickup. It is $10/month per website, plus a 5% Benchlight fee on product revenue after discounts, excluding shipping and tax. Stripe processing fees are separate. You can add it to a free or paid Benchlight website; see the full pricing details.
Your before-opening check.
- Every product photo, description, price and variant matches what you can supply.
- Stock counts reflect the items available for sale.
- Pickup or shipping instructions, contact details and store policies are clear.
- Stripe setup is complete and the storefront preview looks right on your phone.
- You know where to find an order, update fulfillment and handle a refund.
Try the dashboard demo to see the tools with fictional sample data. When your own shop is ready, review it and explicitly activate the module. Starting setup alone does not activate a subscription.
Put it to work.
