Bench Notes #4

Your customers are already looking you up. A website is where they find you, believe you and decide to call.

Someone hears your name from a neighbor, sees your truck, or finds you in a group chat. Before they call, they do one thing: they look you up. What they find in the next ten seconds decides whether they ring you or the next name on the list.
Five things a website does that nothing else does.
- It makes you look real. In a study commissioned by Verisign, about two in three people said a business with its own website is more credible than one without. A clear page with your name, your work and how to reach you settles the question before it is asked.
- It works while you sleep. People search at 11 p.m., on a lunch break, between school runs. Your website answers the same questions every time: what you do, where, when, and how to reach you.
- It’s yours. A social post sinks in a day and the rules change without asking you. Your website stays where you put it, says what you want, and goes with you if you change apps.
- It shows up when people search your name. Search engines need a page to point to. Without one, the first result for your business might be someone else’s listing, or nothing.
- It sends the right people to the phone. When your services, area and hours are written down, the calls you get are from people who already know you are a fit.
Your next customer has already looked you up. Give them something to find.
It doesn’t need to be big.
One honest page beats a perfect site you never finish. Say what you do in everyday words, where you work, when you’re available and how to get in touch. Add a real photo. That’s enough to start. The first-website guide walks through it.
Free, and online in a few minutes.
Benchlight builds the page from a few answers and puts it online free at a yourname.benchlight.page address. No card, no password, no coding. When you’re ready, move it to your own domain, like yourbusiness.com, or have us build the full website for you.
Free sites carry a small Benchlight credit and stay out of search engines for their first week. Publishing is not a promise that Google will list or rank a site.
